Traditional Japanese Music

The history of Japanese music is varied and many forms were imported from China more than thousand years ago . Years later Japanese were reshaped in their own style of expression .

The most famous instruments in all Japan were the Shamisen , Shakuhachi and Koto .

The koto : is a large instrument with 13 strings along the body of the Koto . It has a curved face and the pitch is adjusted with movable bridges placed under each with mobable bridges placed under each strings . It's played with picks worn on the fingers , similar in playing the guitar .

The Shamisen : The instrument is constructed of wood similar as the guitar and a thin neck and a small and rectangular body covered with skin of a dog or cat streched over the body . It has three strings and the pitch is adjusted using the tunning pegs on the head just like a guitar and the violin.

The Shakuhachi : Is a flute made of bamboo and the music is produced by blowing directly into an opening at one end of the flute .
