Transportation and Traffic Rules


●Automobile Driver's Licenses :
In order to obtain an automobile driver's license, you
must make an appointment at the driver's licensing
center. For more information, please contact the
driver's licensing center directly.

For a Small Motor Vehicle License (up to 50cc), please
contact the district police station to apply for the

● Driver's License Renewal
For driver's license renewals, you must go to the
driver's course center. For more details, please

●Buying a Car
Registration Procedures
When you purchase a car or when a car's ownership is
transferred as in a sale or disposal, it is necessary to
file the documents with the Land Transportation Office
(RIKU UN SHIKYOKU)


●Proof of Parking
Before possessing a car, you must first secure a
parking area. You must obtain a proof of parking
(SHAKO SHOUMEI) issued from the police.

●Vehicle Inspection
In order to complete a purchase and/or registration of
an automobile, you must also obtain a Vehicle
Inspection (SHARYOU KENSA or SHAKEN) for your
car, which is usually good for two years (three years for
new cars). A common way to obtain a vehicle
inspection is to go to a nearby service station.

●Compulsory Insurance
(JIDOUSHA SONGAIBAISHOU SEKININ HOKEN)
For those in possession of an automobile and/or
motorcycle, they are required by law to have insurance
for their vehicle(s).

●Optional Insurance (NIN I HOKEN)
Because there have been many instances when the
compulsory insurance was not enough to cover the
damage from a traffic accident it is recommended that
you also purchase optional insurance.

●Trains :
Please check the train information board for the station
you want to go to, then buy a ticket for that amount
posted.
Show your ticket at the ticket gate, check which track
your train will be departing from and then board the
train. There are announcements for each station, so
when you arrive at your desired station, disembark from
the train and turn your ticket in at the ticket gate.

●Buses
The bus fare differs according to the stop. You must
take a numbered ticket from the machine either before
or right after you get on the bus. On the digital display
in the front of the bus, you will see numbers that
represent the numbers on the tickets and the
corresponding fare. Please pay the fare that
corresponds to your ticket number when you wish to
get off the bus. Put your money in the money box at
the front. If you do not have small change, please
exchange your money first.

●Taxi
Taxi's, usually mid-sized cars, that have a red lamp
display of “空車” on the right side of the windshield are
available for hire. It is advisable to write down the
address of the place you want to go and hand it to the
driver. The rear passenger door can be opened
automatically by the driver, so please let the driver
handle the opening and closing of that door. It is
possible that there may be an additional 20 - 30
percent of the cost added for pick-ups between
10:00PM and 6:00AM. If you need a taxi, please
